Working mom needs a boost

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to project their privacy.

Divorced mother of four, full-time employee, full-time college student. That’s a heavy load.

Now add her house being put into foreclosure earlier this year, and a $1,300 bill from a broken hot-water line under a slab foundation in October. Her youngest child requires additional help because of a brain injury.

“I try really hard to keep myself together,” she said. “But when something happens, it throws things out of kilter. I live paycheck to paycheck.”

She was able to overcome the foreclosure hurdle and keep her 60-year-old home, but that process was expensive.

The extra expenses have made it difficult to keep up. Not to mention trying to provide something special for her children — ages 16, 14, 10 and 11 — for Christmas.

She doesn’t receive any support from her ex-husband and there’s no extended-family help. Her job as an administrative assistant doesn’t pay much.

“Returning to school at this time in my life helps me show the importance of higher education to my kids,” the 43-year-old woman, who is studying to become a social worker, wrote in her application to Share the Season. “I believe in working hard and not asking for handouts. However, when I saw the Share the Season story in today’s paper, I thought that this may be an answer to my prayers.”

Share the Season has raised $73,700 so far.
