Mother and injured son need help to get by

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

A mother and son, 77 and 54, are in need of help this holiday season.

He is in a wheelchair after an accident three months ago. While trimming branches in his yard, he was knocked off his 16-foot extension ladder and broke his pelvis, hip and ribs. After spending five days in the hospital, he was released under one condition.

“They would only let me leave if my mother came back home with me,” he said.

She moved in to his east Wichita mobile home and began caring for him. The two say they do not mind living together.

“We’re both single and we enjoy each other’s company,” he said. “She’s 77 years old, so it’s just nice to be able to spend time with her.”

Though he said he typically maintains the home, he is unable to repair a leaking heating duct and windows because of his injuries.

“I patched (the duct) and it worked for a while,” he said. “But it’s deteriorated over time, to the point where half of our heat is just blowing out to the atmosphere.”

Having a hole in the duct has caused them to spend more on propane than usual, which is a strain on their incomes.

He expects to graduate to a walker in three weeks; he probably will need to use a cane the rest of his life.

Still, he remains hopeful for the future.

“When I found out that there was somebody out there who could help, who wanted to help, it honestly brought me to tears,” he said. “Things are looking up.”

They are asking for help to fix their heating duct and pay their propane bills.

“I’m just thankful that my son made it through his accident and that God has been with us through all of this,” she said.
