Politicians putting country at risk

If the article “Debt panel’s failure could limit growth of economy” (Nov. 24 Eagle) did not awaken people of our nation to a coming economic disaster, we must be brain-dead.

Our politicians in Washington, D.C., are putting this country at economic risk by not coming to terms with one another over such things as finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction. Only time and the American people will tell who is right and who is wrong.

My thought is that a good down payment will be bringing our troops home from Iraq and swift plans for ending our endless war in Afghanistan.

Limit terms

The U.S. Constitution establishes the length of term for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate but places no limit on the number of terms they may serve. Subsequently, we are now “represented” by elected officials whose positions on issues are based on re-election.

Proposed amendments to limit the number of terms have been introduced without success. The narcissistic obsession with re-election, which crosses party lines, makes such an amendment unlikely.

Thus, an unconventional approach will be required. One approach begins with whom we elect to our state governments. State governments cannot change the U.S. Constitution, but they could petition our federal government to pass such an amendment. Even if this doesn’t happen, we will have groomed some viable candidates for national office. This will take time — perhaps decades — but what options do we have?

Most of us agree that the government is broken. We do not agree on whom to elect to make the mend. Perhaps we can turn our “one issue” mentality to electing state representatives who agree with us on this one issue. This process would take more time than we have, but maybe our current members of Congress will awaken to representing us.

Flags stolen

On Nov. 25, we welcomed our son home from his second deployment overseas. With our vehicle containing a trunk of his belongings and three U.S. flags, which were flown in memory of Sept. 11 at the base where he was stationed, we decided to stop for the night in Wichita and stayed at a beautiful hotel with exemplary service. However, imagine our disappointment when we were notified by the front desk the next morning that our vehicle was one of four that had been broken into.

To whoever thought he needed military apparel and DVDs used to keep these servicemen’s boredom at bay: I hope you enjoy them. The three flags are irreplaceable to us. They were accompanied with a certificate and signed by officials. Please do not disgrace them with the same care you used to break our windows and damage our vehicle. If you are not planning to use them, please deliver them to McConnell Air Force Base, and I’m sure they will get them back to us.

Seeing these flags presented to us brought tears to our eyes, but sadness to our hearts when we found them stolen.

Partisan burr

“Hateful irony” (Nov. 28 Letters to the Editor) was an excellent example of “you can’t do it but I can.”

The writer accused talk-show host Rush Limbaugh of being “America’s No. 1 hate monger,” while using such phrases as “viciously sarcastic” and “predatory ‘professional mouth.’”

The writer also accused the general public of “cynicism, selfishness, bigotry, belligerence and hatred.” He said, regarding Limbaugh, that “we’ll listen to the jerk so we can feel more at ease with our own wicked ways.”

Speak for yourself. The writer seems to have a serious partisan, non-transparent burr under his saddle.

The writer apparently has no problem being as “hate mongering” and “viciously sarcastic” as Limbaugh.

Get church right

Culture is changing the nation and church in denial of the word of God. The government is creating the crisis, then using it to exploit the people. Officials divide the people for their own benefit.

The church has the same problem. Anti-Christians are trying to destroy the church, and we are falling for it. The church has become the vehicle for global government, religion and economy.

We need to get the church right before we get the government right. Jesus is our authority and the only moral authority.

A recent e-mail I received said: “The church is kind of like the federal government: Things are not right, but no one does anything about it.” That’s because the same socialism has been brought into the church by unsuspecting or evil men.

If we are read up and prayed up and we look up, we don’t have to give up.
