  • Published Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at 8:34 a.m.

College Hill to have lights tour

The College Hill trolley holiday light tour will be Dec. 11. Tickets will go on sale Monday at Traditions, 3220 E. Douglas.

Trolleys will set out every 15 minutes from East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas, from 5:15 to 9 p.m. to drive by highlights of the neighborhood’s Christmas lights. Tour guides will give some of the history of College Hill. Tickets will be sold for exact times. The cost is $6, free for children under 2.

During the tour hours, the church will have a living nativity, a coffee bar and a display of angel artwork by Paula Plott Amos.

People who would like to take a walking tour of the lights can get a map from the Wichita Skywalkers inside the church for a small fee.

The trolley tour is sponsored by and benefits the College Hill Neighborhood Association.

Handyman Q&A

Q: Is it better, or cheaper, to turn the lights and TV off or leave them on when leaving the room for a few minutes?

A: The re-energization required to turn on lights and other electrical devices is so insignificant that it adds almost nothing to the energy draw, said Tom Reddoch of energy utilization for the Electric Power Research Institute. You’ll save energy by turning them off, even for short periods, except in the case of compact fluorescent lights. The money you save in energy use could be offset by a shorter bulb life. Research shows that the more a CFL is turned off and on, the shorter its life becomes.

The U.S. Energy Star program recommends leaving a CFL on for at least 15 minutes at a time to prevent shortening its lifespan significantly.
