Weve all seen the photos of what well supposedly be wearing in the distant future.
In most futuristic movies, humans usually are wearing a silver metallic unitard. Thankfully, there is a hold on that particular uniform. But the shimmer of metallic fabric right now is bigger than ever. Those who shy away from shimmer and shine most of the year should reach for a metallic dress, jacket or at least an accessory for the holidays.
Shimmering surfaces, glazed, embossed, metallics are now year-round, and not necessarily for evening, said David Wolfe, trends analyst for the Doneger Group.
Shine varies from sparkling solid sequins to subtle shimmer that catches the light. Fabrics from sheer polyester to supple leather are sporting a bit of shine. Designers have had fun using metallic tones when its unexpected, such as a biker jacket or a five-pocket jean. Shoes, boots and handbags also are part of metal mania.
Gay Muenchrath, owner of and buyer for GM Clotheshorse, says shes always been a fan of metallics.
It does span the day or night, and even though its not all-out sparkle, it is very festive, she said. You can have an all-over metallic outfit, or just a touch in a sweater, a scarf or a handbag, Muenchrath said.
Look for silver, gunmetal, gold, copper, brass, antique gold, platinum and combinations of these for the holiday season. And because metallic is proving to be timeless, think about metallic items for gifts.
