Kevin Jones, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism law-enforcement chief, offers the following reminders to hunters heading into fields for deer season:
* An orange hat and vest must be worn at all times while hunting. That includes when sitting in a blind or while in a vehicle looking for deer.
* Permits must be completely filled out, signed and attached to a deer immediately upon the kill and before the animal is moved from the site.
* Electronic devices cannot be used to direct others to a deer's location. That includes the use of cell phones.
* If two people shoot the same deer, the person that fires the killing shot is required to tag the animal. That's even if the other hunter shot it first.
* Only the person who kills a deer may put their permit on the animal. Permits cannot be filled for other people.
* Permission must be received to hunt on private land. If the area is posted with "Written Permission Only" signs or has purple-painted posts, written permission is required. Oral permission is not enough.
* State trespassing laws allow hunters to enter another property in pursuit of a wounded animal. If the landowner requests those hunters to leave, they must do so immediately.
* Anyone participating in a deer hunt must possess a hunting license. That includes people walking in a deer drive or assisting someone looking for deer. A hunting license is not required to simply sit beside someone in a deer blind.
