PARK CITY — It was a long time in the making, and that made it all the more sweet.

The Wichita Wings put together a total team effort on Friday night, defeating the Norfolk SharX 16-11 to notch their first Major Indoor Soccer League victory since the franchise was revived this year — but it wasn't easy.

Wichita coach LeBaron Hollimon was finally relieved to break through into the victory column.

"We've been so close on other occasions," he said.

Those include a season-opening loss in overtime, and a loss at Milwaukee that came down to the final minutes.

"We've been knocking on the door," Hollimon said. "That's what makes the win all the more sweeter."

Hollimon said it was tough to single any player out.

"They all did good work off the ball," he said. "We have a good understanding with how we play. All are committed to defending with high energy."

Jamar Beasley accounted for five points on two goals, and Carlos "Chile" Farias had a three-point goal and two assists for the Wings (1-4).

Beasley, from Fort Wayne, Ind., said having his family here for the Thanksgiving holiday made this game all the more special.

"It's good," he said. "Tonight is all about the team. We stayed together for the win, playing defense and working hard."

Not to be overlooked was the stellar goal play of Sanaldo Carvalho, who made 11 saves.

The Wings hit Norfolk (0-3) hard in the first period, with Farias doing most of the damage. After a scoreless second period, Beasley went to work in the third, helping Wichita to a 14-7 lead.

But the SharX did not allow a goal after the 11:44 mark of the final period, scoring twice to tighten matters up a little.

Note — Northwest High's Class 6A boys soccer champions and coach Bobby Bribiesca were honored at halftime. Hollimon's son is a sophomore on the team.
