Cancer survivor, cosmetology grad needs help with billsBy Matt Riedl
Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.
Freshly graduated from cosmetology school, this woman said she is ready to begin a new chapter for her family of four children, ages 15, 10, 7 and 4.
She had to take a personal leave from the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in 2009 to care for a child with behavior issues. The family has survived on unemployment benefits totaling $308 weekly. To provide for her family, she decided to enroll in cosmetology school in August 2010.
“Successfully completing school gave me a good sense of self-worth,” she said. Finishing school also set a good example for her children, she said.
In June 2011, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She said she is grateful that it was detected early enough to remove the tumor and avoid complications.
“It’s given me a new opportunity to live life with my kids and to pursue a career that I never would have been able to before,” she said.
She is requesting assistance from Share the Season so that she can pay off her existing bills and free up money to start her career and provide a Christmas for her family.
“We try to have a traditional Christmas, but our financial situation is pretty strapped,” she said. “The kids would be happy with just about anything – they don’t get a lot of luxury.”
