Layoff, big water bill put woman under pressure

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

Since being laid off in June 2010, she hasn’t stopped searching for a stable job.

“I have been seeking work since then with resumes or applications to more than 1,729 jobs,” she said.

She receives some support through unemployment payments, but that expires in December.

“I have been able to make most ends meet through some unemployment and tax refunds,” she said. “I went back to online school to access school loans to make ends meet.”

Her biggest concern is her costly water bill.

“My water bill is so large because a neighbor’s child left my hose on and wasn’t discovered for many days,” she said. “Every month is a new payment arrangement with utility companies to keep them on, and every month I just fall farther behind.”

A single mother of two daughters, she is thankful for any kind of assistance she receives.

“Any help … to help at least just get current, would help so much,” she said.

Share the Season has raised $30,676 so far.
