The Kansas Pavilions have lost $552,000 so far in 2011 and need $158,000 more to finish the year.
Sedgwick County commissioners voted 5-0 Wednesday to transfer that amount from the Intrust Bank Arena fund to the pavilions' operating fund.
Voters approved using arena funds to sustain the pavilions when they passed the 1 percent countywide sales tax to build the arena in 2004.
The county has been using the arena funds to subsidize the pavilions for the past couple of years, the county said.
When Britt Brown Arena opened as part of the Kansas Coliseum complex, it operated with a separate checking account to deposit show revenues and pay for show expenditures quickly and after normal business hours, according to the county.
When Britt Brown closed last year, the pavilions went from operating as a part of the Coliseum complex to operating as a single entity.
Because historical financial data for the pavilions is mixed and at times indistinguishable from data for Britt Brown Arena, the 2011 and 2012 budgets for the pavilions had to be created using "best estimates" of actual pavilion revenue and expenditures, the county said.
The most recent quarterly financial plan updates show that the pavilions will need another $158,000 to finish this fiscal year. That will bring the pavilions' total budget to $1.5 million for 2011.
The arena fund had budgeted $584,900 for the pavilions this year, but most of that had been used by the end of the third quarter.
The additional $158,000 brings the total estimated subsidy for the pavilions from the downtown arena fund for 2011 to $743,000.Reach Fred Mann at 316-268-6310 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
