* Kansas Wesleyan defeated Bethany 25-12, 25-12, 25-20 to win the KCAC regular-season title and earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Basketball

NBA owners and players were engaged in another marathon session Wednesday, meeting for more than 10 hours in talks aimed at ending the lockout. The two sides got back to the table with a small group meeting less than a week after three intense days of mediation didn't produce a new labor deal.

* Fort Hays State is picked to finish third in the MIAA men's race this season, the highest spot of any Kansas school. Missouri Southern was picked first, Washburn fourth, Pittsburg State seventh and Emporia State eighth. Missouri Southern was the women's pick, too, with Fort Hays third, Washburn fourth, Pittsburg State fifth and ESU ninth.

Golf

Wichita State's Hunter Sparks was named Missouri Valley player of the week for the third time. He won the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Las Cruces, N.M.

soccer

Joel Lindpere scored in the 61st minute as New York won at FC Dallas 2-0 in an MLS wild-card playoff match. New York faces Los Angeles in the two-game, aggregate-goal semifinals beginning Sunday.

Tennis

Maria Sharapova pulled out of the WTA Championships in Istanbul with a sore ankle after losing her second straight match at the season-ending tournament. Her withdrawal ensures that Caroline Wozniacki will finish the year with the No. 1 ranking, despite losing her group-stage match against Russia's Vera Zvonareva.

Pan American Games

American Bridgette Caquatto won the all-around gymnastics competition and was the only competitor to break the 14-point barrier in the uneven bars.

* Hoping to win the gold medal for the first time since 1983, the United States men's basketball team hung on for a 77-76 win over the Dominican Republic.

Baseball

Signing bonuses for amateur draft picks is the last major issue left in talks for baseball's new labor contract. Commissioner Bud Selig wants a system of fixed signing bonuses that tie the amount to when a prospect is drafted, known as slotting. Players have traditionally said the signing bonuses should be the subject of negotiation.

Hockey

Carey Price made 21 saves for his 100th win during Montreal's 5-1 win over Philadelphia, ending a six-game losing skid.
