Ann Fox

Executive director

Wichita Habitat for Humanity

Ann Fox feels like she has prepared her whole working life for the job she started this month.

She worked with volunteers in the health-care field, in project management for a construction firm and with a board of directors in Newman University's alumni relations office.

All should help as she heads Habitat for Humanity, which uses volunteer labor to build homes for low-income residents.

"In a very interesting way, it uses every skill I've learned along the way," Fox said.

Fox, 52, grew up in the Northeast and came to Wichita to attend what was then Kansas Newman College in the 1970s.

At Habitat, her job will be to develop fundraising and carry out goals set by the board. That includes building about 15 homes next year.

She heads a 12-person staff and also works with a volunteer work force that has numbered about 10,000 since the chapter's inception in 1986.

One area of emphasis is Stewart Village, a Habitat development in south Wichita named for Fox's predecessor, Linda Stewart.

"We're building neighborhoods where people are getting to know each other because they've built each other's homes," she said.

Fox and her husband, Mark, who recently retired as a high school science teacher in Maize, have four children. Outside work, Fox likes to read and recently completed her first half-marathon.

"Now I have the bug," she said. "I'm sure I'll be trying it again."
