One person is dead and three others injured after a house exploded Sunday near Cheney Reservoir.
Emergency rescue crews were called to 26001 Outwest Road at the northeast side of Cheney Reservoir shortly after noon Sunday. They found the two-story home had been leveled and was on fire, according to a news release by Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson.
Three people were found with burns and abrasions. A resident of the home, Melissa Glass Settle, 53, was flown to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where she was in critical condition. Also found were Settle's daughter, Susan Hoover, 23, of Oklahoma City, who was in fair condition at St. Francis; and Daniel Sigg, 27, of Andale, who was in fair condition.
Nearly two hours after the explosion, the body of a 60-year-old woman from Missouri was found in the rubble of the house. She was pronounced dead.
According to Henderson, the woman was a friend visiting the Settles. Her name was being withheld pending notification of family.
The Kansas Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
Henderson said there was no indication of foul play and that neighbors told authorities a new water heater had been installed at the residence within the past week.
Emergency and fire crews from Haven, Cheney and Pretty Praire responded along with the Reno County Sheriff's Office.
