1. OPENING: Chapada Chophouse & Churrascaria: The restaurant going into former Ted's Montana Grill space at 2142 N. Tyler Road now has a name, a bunch of signage, and a rough opening date. Tad Fugate's restaurant is planned as a Brazilian churrascaria/American chophouse combo and should open in the middle of October. Waiters will carve meat tableside, and the menu will include more traditional chophouse dishes such as steaks.
2. RE-OPENING: Sugar Sisters: The bakery and cafe formerly located in the Bocconcini Italian Eatery space at 4811 E. Central will reopen around Thanksgiving at 917 W. Douglas in Delano. The small space will have seating for about 10 and offer bakery items and a few lunch options.
3. CLOSING: Sit @ Thai Express: Owner Nikki Phumsawarng closed this five-month-old, mostly carryout restaurant at 4910 E. Central on Tuesday, citing "internal problems." Sit @ Thai Bistro, her original restaurant at 7603 W. 21st St., is still open.
QUICK BITES
AVI's menu is ducky
Ben Arnold has released the menu for his new AVI, the fine dining restaurant that should open in the newly remodeled Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel at Douglas and Waco by mid-October. Created with input from new chef Adam Courtney (who replaced original chef Jeremy Wade), the menu includes high-end dishes such as steak, veal and duck. There's also a delightfully long list of entrees based around fish and seafood. Most entrees average between $25 and $30. Chili cookoff results
Last weekend's Wichita Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff may have set an attendance record, organizers say. Though they don't have final numbers in yet, they're speculating that a record- breaking 9,000 people attended, sampling chili and watching crazy chili-centered contests and activities. The Grand Champion title, which comes with a $1,000 prize, went to Cindy Harmon and her Chili Cocineros. Cindy and Co. also were grand champions in 2010.
