SAVORY PIE WEEK: SAUSAGE, APPLE AND CHEESE PIE

Pie is a fabulous dessert. But in the fall and winter, it also makes a fabulous dinner. This week, we'll share some succulent savory pie recipes. Today's comes from Ladies Home Journal.

INGREDIENTS
3/4 pound hot or sweet sausage, casings removed
2 red onions, chopped (about 3 cups)
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/3-inch dice
2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage, plus whole leaves for garnish
1/2 cup apple cider
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
Vegetable cooking spray, for pan
1 15 oz. box prepared piecrust sheets, thawed if frozen
Flour, for dough
1 1/4 cups whole milk
5 eggs
1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
