Comings, goings and growings (Sept. 2)
1. GOING: After 14 years in business, Timberline Steakhouse at 2243 N. Tyler Road has closed. The east-side Timberline closed earlier this year.
2. COMING: Timberline's exit makes room for a west-side Jose Pepper's , which will take over the space soon. A popular east-side Jose Pepper's opened in 2009 in the Plazzio development at 11423 E. 13th St.
3. GROWING: Bella Vita Bistro at 120 N. West St., which has grown in popularity since opening in 2010, is expanding. Owners will double the restaurant size, adding a bar and space for private parties. They hope to have the addition done by December.
Downtown's Holy land
Holy land Mediterranean Grill, the latest restaurant to take over the oft-occupied, oft-vacated space at 217 E. Douglas, opened Tuesday. It features a menu of Mediterranean specials, such as falafel, kebabs and hummus, as well as some more exotic-sounding dishes. It features indoor and outdoor seating and will offer hookah smoking outdoors in the evenings. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Wednesdays, and the restaurant is hoping to attract an after-bar crowd with 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. hours Thursdays through Saturdays. For more information, call 316-265-5393.
The Old Town Farmers' Market at First and Mosley is pitting local chefs against each other Saturday for its annual Iron Chef Competition. The chefs will be given a "secret ingredient" at 8:30 a.m. and will have until 9:45 a.m. to turn it into a winning dish. Competitors are Ben George of Tallgrass Country Club, Paul Freimuth of the Hyatt, Adam Courtney, who's about to take over at A.V.I., and Brian Mangers of the Candle Club. George won last year's competition, when the secret ingredient was roasted peppers.
Tropics is back
It was closed for two months, but now the Tropics Lounge at 2705 N. Broadway is back in business with new ownership. Cherri Tyler, who has childhood memories of the famous bar and sandwich purveyor, recently bought the restaurant and is keeping its appearance and menu the same. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The bar will be closed on Labor Day. For more information, call 316-305-4181.— Denise Neil
