This summer officially blazed its way into Wichita history Thursday, when the temperature hit 100 for the 51st time. Triple digits arrived at 11:39 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, lifting 2011 to the top of the list of most 100-degree days in the city.
The old mark of 50 had stood for 75 years, set during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. Thursday's high of 106 came close to the record high for Sept. 1 of 107, set in 1990.
Another 100-degree day today should add to the record, forecasters say, before a front brings cooler temperatures and a chance of showers Saturday.
And the rest of Labor Day weekend should serve as a clear reminder that fall is coming, with highs Sunday and Monday in the low 80s — or more than 25 degrees lower than Thursday.
