The fall 2011 Entrepreneurship Forum series at Wichita State University's Center for Entrepreneurship will focus on two innovation-rich industries before wrapping up with a celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week.
The hour-long forums are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 15, Oct. 20 and Nov. 11 in Devlin Hall on the WSU campus.
The presenters include:
* Sept. 15: The Green Industry. Eric Borland, president and CEO of Alpha BioSystems; David Daniels, CEO of Alternative Energy Solutions International, and John Wesley, CEO of Universal Lubricants.
* Oct. 20: The Service Industry. Norman Arensdorf, chairman of the board of Village Tours & Travel; Ben Arnold, owner of Corporate Caterers of Wichita and BLA Enterprises, and Bill Maness, president of Syndeo Outsourcing.
* Nov. 17: Global Entrepreneurship Week with a speaker to be announced.
The key for an entrepreneur, Wesley said, is to always look ahead.
"Don't look at things the way they are," he said. "Look at what they can be."
Wesley, whose Universal Lubricants is one of the pioneers in the recycled motor oil industry, said he's an advocate of recycling in all elements of business.
"Entrepreneurship is what's built this country and this community," he said. "From an entrepreneur's perspective, there's nothing out there that should go wasted.
"The products and services we provided were part of a waste stream. Now those waste streams have become revenue streams, creating virgin-quality motor oil."
Arnold, owner of Corporate Caterers, believes that entrepreneurship begins with working for another person.
"You have to work for someone and treat their company like your own first," he said. "It's very important, I think, to have that philosophy or level of determination inside you before you open your own store."
Arnold also advocates striking quickly to grow in a down economy.
"With what's occurred in the last 24 months with the economy, I take the strong approach that a down economy is the time to expand and grab market share," he said.
"It's like an accident in an auto race. You can either stop and wait for the smoke to clear or drive through the smoke. I drive through the smoke."
