Three restaurant closings
1. Kwan Court, 1443. N. Rock Road: The famous Chinese restaurant (with arguably Wichita's best lunch buffet) is for sale, according to records, and could be gone by the end of September. The restaurant has operated in Wichita for more than 20 years.
2. Knolla's Pizza, 13011 E. 21st St.: Wink Hartman Sr. closed his Knolla's, which he opened three years ago, a couple of weeks ago. Hartman told The Eagle that the restaurant "didn't meet projections."
3. Brooklyn's Chophouse & Brew Tavern, 6200 W. 21st St.: David Chaffin closed his troubled restaurant about two weeks ago.
QUICK BITES
New brewery
Wichita Brewing Co & Pizzeria is now open in the former Play It Again Sports location at 8815 W. 13th St. It specializes in home-brewed beer, brick oven pizzas, sandwiches and salads. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays and noon to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 316-440-2885.
Firkin Thursdays
Wichita lost the Firkin and Bull restaurant last year, but River City Brewing Co. at 150 N. Mosley is providing an excuse to use the word "firkin" again. Throughout August, the restaurant is putting on "Firkin Thursdays," during which beer aficionados can watch the head brewer tap into a special cask of ale called "firkin," a word that refers to a unit of volume, equal to a quarter of a barrel. The weekly events start at 6 p.m., during which time River City also will give away T-shirts, koozies and more to its Facebook fans. For more information, call 316-263-2739.
Freddy's adds chewing ice
Wichita-based Freddy's Frozen Custard is replacing its ice machines across the chain to provide what's commonly known as "chewing ice" to its customers. The ice is similar in texture and shape to the ice famously served at Sonic, and it's easy to chew. Each Freddy's will spend between $12,000 and $14,000 adding new ice machines. The Wichita Freddy's have already made the switch, and other stores across the chain will soon follow. "It's one of those things where we had to justify the expense," said Freddy's co-owner Scott Redler. "We know our guests want it."
