Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: A searchable database of people and businesses with tax warrants filed against them by the Kansas Department of Revenue.

Why you'd want it: To learn if someone you might do business with has a warrant for various types of back taxes such as income tax, sales tax or guest tax.

Where you get the records: Go to https://www.kdor.org/warrants/. Then search by individual or business.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
