Clothing and equipping children for a new school year can be costly, but there is help for families who can't swing the expense.

"The need is greater every year," said Jolene Burgess, chairwoman of the Assistance League's Operation School Bell.

"We try our best to get kids the things they need to stay in school and feel good about themselves.... Every child likes to have new clothes."

Some information on how to make a donation or apply for help:

* Operation School Bell prepares clothing kits and school uniforms for Wichita children nominated by school social workers. The kits include new shirts, pants, undergarments, a backpack, coat, hat and gloves.

Last year the group provided free clothing to about 4,200 elementary and secondary children. To donate, call the Assistance League at 316-687-6107.

To apply for a kit, call your child's school and ask to speak with a school nurse, social worker or counselor, who will request the clothing.

* The KAKE School Supply Landslide collects backpacks, notebooks, calculators, crayons and other items for children in Wichita and surrounding communities. Last year the program served more than 10,000 students.

Items can be dropped off at any Credit Union of America location and other local businesses through Aug. 27.

To apply for free supplies, call the Salvation Army at 316-263-2769. If eligible, officials will give you a location where you can pick up your supplies starting Aug. 8. Bring proof of address, proof of identity for each household member and proof of income for each household member.

* Communities in Schools also provides school supplies to students in Wichita, Derby, Haysville and Valley Center. For more information, call 316-973-5110 or visit www.ciswichita.org.
