Volleyball

Wichita State will play tournaments at Hawaii, Louisville and Colorado State before opening its home schedule Sept. 14 against Oklahoma, according to the schedule released Friday. WSU plays two home non-conference matches, against OU and Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 20), and five of its 11 home matches come in a 10-day stretch in September. See the schedule on page 7D.

HOCKEY

Playmaker Aaron Davis will return to the Wichita Thunder next season, coach Kevin McClelland said on Friday afternoon. The hard-working and dependable veteran led the team with 46 assists and scored 72 points while playing in all 66 games. McClelland continues to bring back key players from last season's playoff squad, as the Davis news follows the Thursday announcement that top scorer Matt Robinson and captain Daniel Tetrault will be back.

* Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane has a fractured left wrist and will need six to eight weeks to recover.

The team disclosed the injury Friday, saying it was discovered recently during his offseason training. Blackhawks team Dr. Michael Terry said Kane will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a scaphoid fracture. Both Terry and Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said Kane is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp.

GOLF

Troy Matteson and George McNeill are tied for the Viking Classic lead midway through a waterlogged second round at Annandale Golf Club that was suspended due to frequent thunderstorms.

Matteson finished his round but McNeill was on the 18th fairway when the final delay was called at about 6:30 p.m. local time due to lightning in the area. The day featured nearly six hours of delays as thunderstorms rolled through central Mississippi on a steamy summer afternoon.

Matteson fired a 6-under 66 for the second consecutive day, taking advantage of Annandale's forgiving greens. He birdied his final three holes after a nearly four-hour delay to finish at 12 under.

CYCLING

Norway's Thor Hushovd won the 13th stage of the Tour de France, overtaking Frenchman Jeremy Roy near the end after making up time on the downhill finish at Lourdes, France.

Roy thought he had clinched the first Tour stage win of his career by attacking at the foot of the huge climb to Col d'Aubisque. But he couldn't hold off Hushovd and David Moncoutie, who finished second.

The peloton, including overall leader Thomas Voeckler, was lagging nearly nine minutes behind Hushovd when he completed 95-mile route from Pau to the Catholic shrine town of Lourdes.

MOTORSPORTS

Ryan Newman won his 47th career pole, turning a track-record lap of 135.232 mph at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Tony Stewart was second to give Stewart-Haas Racing its first front-row sweep.

Stewart was right behind his employee and teammate at 135.064. They were the only drivers to top 135 mph.

Newman won his first pole of the season in the No. 39 Chevrolet, a far cry from the 20 combined poles he earned in 2003-04. Those pole positions early in his career helped boost his total and he's now 10th on the career poles list, including a record five poles at New Hampshire.

It's the sixth pole for Stewart-Haas Racing, but the first time both SHR Chevrolets will start side-by-side at the front of the field for Sunday's Sprint Cup race.

David Reutimann, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski round out the top five.

BASEBALL

UCLA right-hander Trevor Bauer has won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player.

Bauer was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the third pick on the first round of last month's amateur draft after going 13-2 with 1.25 ERA and Division I-leading and Pac-10 record 203 strikeouts. He finished the season with nine consecutive complete games.

Virginia left-hander Danny Hultzen and Texas right-hander Taylor Jungmann were the other finalists.

This was the first time in the 34-year history of the award that all three finalists were pitchers.
