Wichitan Tony Clark finished 21st Wednesday in the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon, an ultimate endurance test from Death Valley, Calif., to Mount Whitney, Calif.
Clark, a 33-year-old Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan, did not beat his goal of finishing in 30 hours but still finished the three-day event in 34 hours, 17 minutes, 58 seconds. The route climbed about 8,600 feet from start to finish.
Golf
Steve Newman defeated Derek Harrison 2-up Wednesday to win the Wichita Golf Association match-play tournament at Tallgrass Country Club. It's Newman's third victory in five years. Jeff Schauner beat Randall Bannon 2-up in the first flight final, and Max Lazzo beat J.D. Munley 3 and 2 in the second flight.
* David Auer, a Kapaun grad who will play at Kansas this fall, won the Trusted Choice Insurance state tournament at Alvamar in Lawrence with a two-round, 5-under 139.
* Kansas State golfer Gianna Misenhelter has a seven-shot lead through two rounds of the 54-hole Kansas Women's Golf Association amateur championship at McPherson's Turkey Creek. Misenhelter had her second straight 69 and is followed by KU players Audrey Yowell and Jennifer Clark at 145.
Softball
Former Wichita State coach Mike Perniciaro, who resigned after his just-completed sixth season, was hired Wednesday as an assistant at Mississippi.
Football
Butler is ranked sixth and Hutchinson eighth in the JCGridiron.com preseason junior college rankings. Fort Scott is ranked 23rd. City College of San Francisco, which does not play in the NJCAA, is top ranked.
* Kansas senior Jeremiah Hatch was named to the initial list for the Rimington Trophy, given to college football's top center.
* Texas-Arlington is expected to become a Western Athletic Conference member in 2012-13 after a vote today by the Texas system's board of regents. UTA does not have football, and it's not believed to be a condition of membership, but the new affiliation is expected to revive a push to renew the sport. The WAC is trying to rebuild following the departures of Boise State, Nevada, Hawaii and Fresno State.
* An NCAA official told Auburn coach Gene Chizik that it is not done investigating the Tigers' program and the recruitment of Cam Newton, The New York Times reported. Chizik asked NCAA vice president for enforcement Julie Roe Lach several questions, including why the NCAA had not announced that the Newton investigation was finished, during a presentation at the Southeastern Conference meetings last month. "You'll know when we're finished. And we're not finished," Roe Lach told Chizik, an exchange confirmed by four SEC basketball coaches: Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings, LSU's Trent Johnson, Mississippi's Andy Kennedy and Arkansas' Mike Anderson.
Poker
The World Series of Poker main event resumes today with less than half of the starting field of 6,865 — and a nearly live television twist. Coverage tape-delayed by about 30 minutes will air on ESPN2, Channel 33, at 7 tonight. It's as close to live as Nevada gambling regulators will allow. ESPN2 plans to air several hours each day, giving players more insight than they might have had on opponents in the past, when coverage didn't air until sessions were over.
Basketball
Former Kansas guard Mario Chalmers is opening a specialty shop for cancer patients at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Chalmers, now with the NBA's Miami Heat, said he wants to help cancer patients because the disease claimed the mother of a childhood friend.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for the shop, called Mario's Closet, is set for July 22. The shop will carry a variety of free or low-cost accessories such as wigs, prosthetics and hats.
* The Indiana Pacers hired former Lakers assistant Brian Shaw as associate head coach.
* Katie Douglas scored 20 points in Indiana's 90-78 WNBA victory over Connecticut, the Fever's seventh straight win.... In New York, Nicole Powell scored 20 points in the Liberty's 91-69 rout of Atlanta.... WNBA scoring leader Sylvia Fowles had 21 points in Chicago's 72-54 home win over Tulsa (1-12), which is 0-2 under interim coach Teresa Edwards after Nolan Richardson resigned following a 1-10 start.... Diana Taurasi's 27 points lifted Phoenix past Minnesota 112-105 in Minneapolis.
Cycling
Mark Cavendish nearly lost a shoe in the final stretch but kept his cool to win a rainy 11th stage of the Tour de France in a mass sprint, easily beating Andre Greipel of Germany at the line to seize the leading sprinter's green jersey. French rider Thomas Voeckler kept the race leader's yellow jersey after the 104.1-mile trek from Blaye-les-Mines to Lavaur. Voeckler finished 75th in the stage but with the same time as the winner.
