1. COMING: Wichita Brewing Co. & Pizzeria, 8815 W. 13th St.: The new restaurant is nearly complete, and owner Jeremy Horn says opening day is probably about three weeks away, depending on how inspections go. The restaurant will serve wood-fired brick oven pizzas, panini sandwiches, calzones and seven to 10 handcrafted beers.
2. COMING: Five Guys Burgers and Fries downtown: If you haven't been downtown recently, you haven't seen the quick progress being made on the Five Guys location that sits just across Ida from The Anchor on east Douglas. The walls are already up, and a sign at the construction site promises a September opening date.
3. GOING: Lotus Garden, 2135 W. 21st St.: The Chinese restaurant has appeared closed for weeks, and the phone is disconnected. In March, The Eagle reported that the restaurant had a tax warrant filed against it.
QUICK BITES
Ya Ya's loses the 'i'
Good news for people who could never remember how to spell Yia Yia's . It's now officially spelled " Ya Ya's." The fine dining restaurant opened in Bradley Fair in April 1995 and was named Yia Yia's, which roughly translates to "grandmother" in Greek. Owners had always intended it to be spelled without the i's, but another restaurant already had dibs on that spelling. Now that that business is out of business, Ya Ya's owner PB&J is free to spell Ya however it wants. The change is already reflected on the menus in the restaurant and in the website's url. Eventually, the outdoor signage also will be replaced.
Gluten-free blog
Dale Huntington, a local food fan who has Celiac disease, moved from California to Wichita in 2009 and was a little alarmed to find that the local college mascot was a shock of wheat. People with Celiac must avoid foods that contain wheat gluten. He started a blog called " Gluten Free in Wichita" pointing other diners on a gluten-free diet to delicious meals he'd discovered, and the blog has become very popular. Check it out at celiacwichita.blogspot.com.
