HCA-Galichia deal progressing slowly

When Wesley parent HCA announced in December its plans to acquire Galichia Heart Hospital, officials of the Nashville, Tenn.-based company expected the deal to consummate in the first quarter.

Then in April they expected it to close in the second quarter.

Now, officials are expecting it in the third quarter.

"I think it's just taken longer to work through all the planning and logistics than was anticipated," Wesley spokeswoman Susan Burchill said Tuesday.

Burchill said the acquisition deal continues to progress, adding that she's unsure what is the normal time frame on an acquisition of this type.

HCA and Galichia Heart announced last year that they had signed a letter of intent that would add the physician-owned, 82-bed acute care hospital to HCA's area properties. Those properties are Wesley Medical Center at 550 N. Hillside, Wesley West Emergency and Diagnostic Center at 8710 W. 13th St. and Surgicare of Wichita, an ambulatory surgery center at 810 N. Lorraine.

Galichia Heart, which has about 350 employees, is at 2601 N. Woodlawn.

Steve Harris, CEO of Galichia Heart, said he's anticipating that the deal will be finalized by or before Sept. 30, when the third quarter ends.

"We have reached agreement on all significant issues and believe the closing will take place sometime during the third quarter," Harris said.
