Three places to slurp shaved ice

Wichita Eagle

When summer hits, the portable shaved ice booths open. But they move around, and it takes a detective's degree to find them sometimes. Here's what we unearthed. If you know of others, e-mail dneil@wichitaeagle.com.

1. Heavenly Sno: A Heavenly Sno booth is set up near the 29th and Woodlawn Home Depot, facing 29th Street North. There's also one in the parking lot of McKown's Auto Service at Harry and Edgemoor.

2. Flamingo Sno: Festive trailers serving a long list of fruity flavors are set up at Kellogg and Tyler in front of Kay Wiggins and at Pawnee and I-135, in the parking lot of Checkers.

3. Hawaiian Shaved Ice: A tiny tiki-sided trailer is set up near 21st and Oliver in the parking lot of Books-To-Go. A bonus: The hut also hawks nachos and pretzels.

QUICK BITES

Burritos for soldiers

Wichita-area Chipotle restaurants are honoring members of the military by offering them a free burrito, burrito bowl, salad or order of tacos from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Those seeking the special must arrive in uniform or display a valid military ID.

Now open: Luca

Luca Italian Kitchen, the restaurant Melad Stephan opened last week in the former Uptown Bistro space at 301 N. Mead in Old Town Square, is now serving a lunch and dinner menu that includes upscale pizzas, pastas and entrees. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. Call 316-262-3232 for more information.

Where to find restaurant ratings

Online records detailing health inspections in Kansas restaurants have moved from a website hosted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to a site run by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The website for searching and reading restaurant inspection reports is www.ksda.gov/food_safety. Click on "Food Safety and Lodging inspection results," click "I agree," and then search restaurants from across Kansas by name.
