Body shop moving to spot with more traffic

  • Published Friday, June 17, 2011, at 12:07 a.m.

Traffic accidents may be what keep Coffman Body Works in business, but the company's location at 1710 E. 37th St. North is no longer generating as much traffic as it once did.

So the collision repair center is moving to the former Kmart Auto Center building at 4200 W. Kellogg in August.

"I looked up the traffic charts," says vice president Christian Parsons , who owns the business with his father, Rick , and brother, Blaine .

Coffman Body Works' almost 6,000-square-foot current space has about 6,000 cars pass it a day.

"There's about 180,000 vehicles that drive by the other location a day," Parsons says. "You can see it from both directions."

That's the biggest reason for the move.

The new 7,400-square-foot building also is better situated for a body shop, Parsons says.

"We kind of get bottlenecked in the building we have now," he says.

The current space is one large, open shop.

The new area will be more partitioned, with a separate paint area on the back side.

"Work flow should be able to be increased significantly," Parsons says.

He says the shop has always offered services such as details, headlight restorations, corrosion protection and undercoating, but now it'll be able to offer those services on a more consistent basis.

Troy Farha of Grubb & Ellis/Martens Commercial Group handled the lease.

Parsons says the former Kmart space has been vacant for more than a decade, so he and his family plan extensive renovation, including painting the exterior.

There will be an open house with discounted services when the business moves in August.

We'll let you know an exact date closer to the time.

Square deal

Daryl Crotts, who owns Crotts Commercial Real Estate , has purchased his first multifamily property.

Crotts has other types of commercial property as well but thought Kingsley Square Apartments was a good opportunity.

The 50-unit complex is at First and Joann streets, which is six blocks east of West Street and one block north of Douglas.

"It's never been on the market," Crotts says.

The owner built half the complex in 1978 and the other half in 1980.

"It was in really good condition. Well maintained," Crotts says. "We were just glad to have the privilege to take over ownership."

He's open to buying other apartments as well.
