Three facts about 'Man Made' art

  • Published Friday, June 17, 2011, at 12:07 a.m.

A new exhibit by Wichita artist Collin Allen will go on display tonight at Go Away Garage, 508 S. Commerce, and will remain up until July 1. An opening reception is planned for 7 to 11 p.m.

Here's what you need to know about the art.

1. Old becomes new: Allen's specialty is making art out of recycled items. His new show includes several light fixtures made from telegraph insulator caps. He also has wallets and journals made from rescued leather scraps and belt buckles made from vintage license plates.

2. Many mediums: The show will feature several of Allen's artistic areas of interest, including paintings, sculptural wood hangings, leather and metal workings and multimedia fabric renderings.

3. Artist's inspiration: Allen says he not only wants to have a positive impact on the environment with his art, but he also wants to remind people of the importance of looking at things from a different angle.
