FULLERTON, Calif. —Little changed 24 hours later, so Kansas State heads home without a victory in its third NCAA baseball regional appearance.
Illinois pitcher John Anderson held K-State without a big rally, and the Illini's bottom two hitters combined for five hits and four RBIs in a 5-3 elimination-game victory Saturday at Goodwin Field in the Fullerton Regional.
"We've had our backs to the wall pretty much the last three weeks; either win or go home," Wildcat coach Brad Hill said. "We continued to win games in pressure situations."
Not here. Other than the fifth inning, when the Wildcats scored two unearned runs to cut the deficit to 5-3, they didn't mount a rally.
From the sixth inning on, K-State never sent more than three batters to the plate, twice hitting into double plays.
Anderson (8-6) gave up seven hits and one earned run over eight innings.
"He (Anderson) threw strikes, mixed it up," said Jason King, who had one hit in two games, an RBI single in the fifth inning. "If you've got a guy throwing a lot of strikes and thinks, 'If you're going to beat me, you're going to have to swing the bats,' you're going to have a really good chance."
K-State starter Matt Applegate (5-5), a Wichita North grad, also threw strikes, but he was unable to stop Illinois' eight and ninth batters, Davis Hendrickson and Josh Parr.
Hendrickson led off the third inning with a triple and Parr followed with a double that tied the game at 1-1. In the fourth, Hendrickson hit a sacrifice fly and Parr followed with a two-run triple that put the Illini ahead to stay and chased Applegate.
K-State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Mike Kindel's eighth home run, a shot to straightaway center.
"I thought it would be off the fence as soon as I hit it. I guess the wind just took it," Kindel said. "The ball's been carrying out to center and right field... during BP and (Friday) night. I thought as soon as I hit it, I thought it would be a double, but I guess the wind just carried it out."
Notes — This was the first time Kansas State (35-25) failed to win a game at a regional.... Nick Martini's third-inning triple was the 10th of his K-State career, placing him 10th in school history.
