— A 20-year-old man drowned at a private lake in northwest Wichita late Wednesday night, authorities said.

The man, identified by the Sheriff's Office as Phillip S. Green, was with a group of friends who decided to go swimming at the former sandpit near 21st and Hoover Road shortly before 11 p.m., Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Gill told reporters at the scene in a briefing posted online by KFDI.

The victim began experiencing problems while swimming, and members of the group worked to keep him above water and then get him to shore. By the time emergency responders arrived, Gill told reporters, the victim was being pulled from the water.

CPR was performed, and he was then taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gill told reporters that authorities are investigating to see what may have played a role in the incident - including weather conditions and alcohol.
