In the eight months since Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt opened at 21st and Tyler, Wichita has gone full-on yogurt crazy. (Sorry, gelato.)
Suddenly, yogurt shops are turning up everywhere, and the news of new ones just keeps coming.
The difference between this trend and the TCBY era, it appears, is the self-serve concept. Wichitans instantly took to Orange Leaf's setup, which allows them to dispense their own yogurt, pile it with their own toppings and pay by the ounce.
Following is a look at some of the new yogurt shops, most of which are self-serve, that have opened recently or will open in the next several months.
Yogurt Xplosion, 3236 N. Rock Road, 316-295-4680: Amber Dunn opened this self-serve yogurt shop earlier this month, offering 16 flavors of yogurt and more than 40 toppings. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Twisted Cow, 1400 S. Kansas Ave., Newton: A group of Hesston residents just opened a self-serve yogurt shop that features 10 types of yogurt and about 35 toppings. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 10 p.m. Sundays.
Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt is about to have two stores in Wichita, one at 2404 N. Maize Road and the other at the Waterfront, 13th and Webb. Hong's Landscape & Nursery owner Ilsik Hong and his brother, Jaesik, are opening a Peachwave near NewMarket Square in early July. They plan an east-side location eventually. Meanwhile, Doc Green's owners Tammi and Scott Kuthan are planning a Peachwave next to their restaurant at the Waterfront. They plan to open on Thursday and are also looking at the possibility of another east-side location.
CherryBerry Frozen Yogurt Bar, Derby Marketplace and Central and Maize: Derby residents Candace and Terry Wright have opened a CherryBerry at 1918 Rock Road in Derby. And Utah-based CherryBerry franchisees Dan Watkins and Chad Curtis are planning one in the retail center in front of the new Walmart Neighborhood Market at Central and Maize. They plan to eventually open five. The first should be open by mid-summer.
Orange Leaf: The frozen yogurt chain that helped start Wichita's craze will add a fourth location this summer at 11121 W. Maple between Shorty Small's and Felipe's. Jeff Finnell, who owns the Orange Leaf at 21st and Tyler, is opening the new store. Wichita also has Orange Leaf stores at 11414 E. Central and 7730 E. 37th St. North.
Fresh Fruit Bouquet Co.: Trish Jasnoski is moving her business from Central and Rock Road to College Hill Place, near Bella Luna Cafe, and plans to add frozen yogurt to her offerings. She hopes to have the move completed by early July.
Great Harvest Bread Co. is moving its store to 533 N. Woodlawn from 6509 E. Central this fall, and when it does, it will add frozen yogurt. The store should be ready by September.
