WICHITA — The new Lord's Diner in southeast Wichita served dinner to 74 people on its first night Monday — far fewer than the 500 that organizers had prepared for, but a blessing for those who took advantage of the free meal.

"Things went great," the diner's executive director, Windy Glick, said Tuesday. "Everyone enjoyed the meal and really appreciated it. We heard some heart-wrenching stories. And people told us a lot of their friends didn't know about it yet, so we anticipate the number will grow.

"It was really nice, because it let us iron out kinks without a lot of people lined up down the side of the building."

The Lord's Diner at Central and Broadway serves 450 people a night. Both diners are open to the needy and anyone who comes for dinner, no questions asked, 365 days of the year, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The new Lord's Diner is at 2825 S. Hillside.
