Review: Fizz Burgers & Bottles

Fizz Burgers & Bottles opened late last year in Siena Plaza near 37th and Rock, another in the never-ending stream of burger and hot dog places springing up all over Wichita.
It tries to set itself apart with a little fizz bottled sodas and beers as well as unique touches such as house-made pickles, a variety of homemade dipping sauces and spreads, and cake balls for dessert.
Fizz is owned by Scott Bergeson, a local restaurateur whose goal was to open a place serving high-end burgers made with fresh ingredients. His family helps him operate the business.
ON THE MENU: The menu is small and no-frills, with five burgers, four sandwiches, four salads and two varieties of thick-cut fries, both sweet potato and regular. Customers also can choose from pasta salad, potato salad and cole slaw as side options.
DON'T-MISS DISHES: The burgers at Fizz, made with fresh ground chuck, are good if not a little messy. They come in quarter- and half-pound sizes and are served on nicely toasted, buttery buns.
Diners can choose a pre-imagined burger, such as the mushroom Swiss topped with Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions ($6.50, $9 for a half-pound). Or they can build their own burgers, choosing from eight types of cheese, each of which is $1 to $2.50 extra; a variety of toppings, including avocado, fried egg or bacon for an extra $1; and lots of interesting sauces, like spicy pepper mayo or garlic aioli.
Fries are extra, and Wichitans don't like paying extra for fries (or salads or anything on the side, for that matter). A side is $2.50 for regular fries, $3.50 for sweet potato fries, or a family-sized order is $7 or $9. A family-sized order was plenty for two adults and a child.
We built our own burger, adding cheddar cheese and ketchup, but the latter was applied a bit too liberally and the crisped-up bun slid all over the burger, making eating it a messy, difficult proposition.
Some of our fresh-cut fries, though thick and tasty and fresh, were a bit underdone, though the sweet potato fries were excellent and even better dipped in a side of Fizz's own buttermilk ranch.
We also sampled the zesty pulled pork sandwich ($6.50), made with a mustard-based barbecue sauce and topped with garlic dill pickles and lettuce on a toasted bun.
The serving of nicely cooked pulled pork was so huge, the bun could not possibly contain it, and we had another messy dish on and all over our hands. We could have used a lot more of the sauce, but the sandwich was helped with a side of cole slaw, which we spread over the meat.
AMBIENCE: The entry has a gorgeous orange tiled half-wall, and the interior is painted in a soothing green. Booths line the walls, and the dining room has a few tables for larger parties. Fizz also has recently opened its large patio.
PRICE RANGE: Specialty burgers are $5 to $7 for quarter-pound and $7 to $9 for half-pound. Fries are $2.50 to $3.50 extra. Sides, such as potato salad and cole slaw, are $2. Sandwiches are $6 to $7.50.
