Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall confirmed the hiring of Dana Ford as an assistant basketball coach.
Ford, 26, spent the 2007-08 season at WSU as a graduate assistant. He kept in contact with Marshall the past three years, with it understood he would jump at a chance to return.
It's a great, great, great basketball opportunity," Ford said. "I've been there before. I've experienced it."
After his first stint at WSU, Ford worked one season at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College. He spent the past two seasons at Tennessee State as an assistant to former Shocker player John Cooper.
Ford came to WSU with Marshall after working with him as a graduate assistant at Marshall in 2006-07. He played at Illinois State when WSU assistant coach Chris Jans coached there.
The opportunity to work with Marshall and Jans appealed to Ford.
"Those are two of the most influential guys in coaching that I have," he said. "I couldn't turn that down."
Ford said he worked with the guards at Tennessee State. He has not discussed responsibilities on the WSU staff. He said he is finishing his duties at Tennessee State and expects to come to Wichita within a week or so.
"I worked for John Cooper the last two years, and what he's done for me from a maturity standpoint has been unbelievable," Ford said. "He's groomed me into a more experienced coach."
Ford is a native of Tamms, Ill.
Marshall has one opening on his staff after Ford's hiring. Chad Dollar departed WSU after one season to join the staff at Georgia Tech. Marty Gross, a coach at WSU for four seasons, went to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as associate head coach.
