Eco-friendly shirts are good fit for Earth Day

  • Published Monday, April 11, 2011, at 12:07 a.m.

Don't you admire people who are intent on recycling? We're doing better at our house, but we have plenty of room for improvement.

With Earth Day coming on April 22, it seems a good time to concentrate on the "Do One Thing" concept.

A T-shirt company called Revenge Is... is doing two things. With its "Eat Your Veggies" collection of tees and tanks, the company is trying to get you to eat your vegetables and wear an eco-friendly shirt.

Revenge Is... has many celebrity fans including Miley Cyrus, Stephanie Pratt and Melissa Rivers, so don't be surprised to see them with broccoli emblazoned on their chests.

The shirts hit the market this month and feature a variety of designs and a host of your favorite veggies.

They're the perfect thing to wear on Earth Day because they're made from a blend of organic cotton, recycled plastic bottles and Siro Micro Modal, which is made from beech wood from sustainable forests. The contents make the shirts resistant to fading and shrinking. Men's and women's shirts are $49, available at revengeis.com.

Now, pass the carrots and do one ecologically helpful act today. It's fashionable.

Shop till you drop — Shopportunity, the annual shopping extravaganza at NewMarket Square, is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 28.

This is a limited ticket event so if you're planning on going, reserve your ticket now. Call 316-942-6300 or 800-479-6861. If you want to order tickets online, go to ilrcks.org.

There's a new twist this year. Chocolate truffles from Cocoa Dolce will be sold. Each truffle has a gem on the top, and one of the gems is a diamond from Powell Jewelry.

Ticket-holding shoppers will get free photos, drawings for three great prizes, party bus and limousine rides from store to store, and a very cute shopping tote with discount coupons for participating merchants.

All proceeds help people with disabilities who receive services and support from Independent Living Resource Center.

A different fashion show — Why not celebrate income tax day on Friday by attending Project Run-A-Way?

Wichita State University's Shift Space student art gallery will host the fourth annual Project Run-A-Way, a wearable-art fashion show and fundraiser. The evening will showcase one-of-a-kind creations by WSU students and alumni. This year's categories include "Splendid Appendage," "Blast From the Past," "2012" and "Dark Matter."

It's a party because there will be refreshments, live entertainment and a fashion show like no other. All proceeds benefit the gallery in Old Town.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the runway show begins at 8. The gallery is at 800 E. Third St.

Tickets are $10 for WSU students, $20 for nonstudents and $30 for a couple, available at the door.
