Defender Mary Kranick didn't need to score a goal to help Maize defeat Kapaun Mount Carmel 3-0 in the Blue Bracket championship of the Titan Classic on Saturday at South.

With 27:36 left in the first half, Kranick found herself between Kapaun's front line and the Maize goal when Maize's goalkeeper wasn't.

"I knew I was the last one back and had a chance to stop them from scoring," Kranick said. "Our goal was to not get scored on and keep the shutout. Every single year that I've been in high school, we've lost in overtime penalty kicks. It feels so good to finally win the whole thing."

Kranick's save was one of many that kept Kapaun scoreless, and Maize from being scored on over the four-game tournament.

"Kapaun had some good goal-scoring opportunities and our defense and goalkeeper did an exceptional job today of thwarting those opportunities," Maize coach Jay Holmes said. "Mary came up big off that goal-line save and McKenzie Hartzog headed one out of the box. That prevented two goal-scoring opportunities for Kapaun."

Maize got on the scoreboard within the opening six minutes with a goal down the left side from senior forward Kylie Campbell.

"That goal gave us a lot of momentum," Campbell said. "Any type of distance we could put between us and (Kapaun) helped out a lot."

Maize added another score with a second-chance goal from senior forward Kesley Lynden with 17:27 left in the first half.

"We made a few mistakes that caused those first two goals," Kapaun coach Alan Shepard said. "Playing Maize this early definitely exposed some of our weaknesses. They were a little quicker to the ball than we were, particularly in the first half."

Sophomore Gabby Ybarra's goal with 1:44 left sealed the win.

"The expectations have always been high at Maize. We've been in the state tournament the last four years and I think they expect to come here and do well," Holmes said. "For the last two years we've taken second, so I'm grateful to be able to walk away with a win today."
