Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.
For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.
The record: Schedule of public comment hearings for Kansas Department of Corrections inmates eligible for parole.
Why you'd want it: To learn whether someone you know, or someone who committed a crime against you, is up for parole.
Where you get the record: The hearings are available online on the KDOC's website. Go directly to www.doc.ks.gov/kpb/public-comment-sessions-1. Then click on the links for public comments by month. You can see the schedule for hearings and a list of inmates who have hearings any given month.
How much it will cost: The information is free.
