WICHITA — The plan hatched by three teenagers was unhinged by a quirky circumstance: the clerk who happened to be working at the Long John Silver's they robbed on East Harry Tuesday night recognized one of them.
When a police officer pulled them over for an unrelated matter later that night, he recognized the name given by the clerk, authorities said. And now all three boys — ages 15, 16 and 18 — are in jail facing possible robbery charges.
Two of the three boys went into the fast-food restaurant at 4206 E. Harry at about 9:35 p.m., pointed guns at the clerk and demanded money from the register, Lt. Doug Nolte said. The clerk recognized the 16-year-old and told police after the robbers left. The third suspect stood at the door outside, apparently serving as a lookout.
The three teens then left in the same vehicle. They were stopped by an officer at about midnight on an related matter, authorities said, and then taken in for questioning after the officer realized the 16-year-old was wanted in connection with the robbery.
