Pack mentality

Being from the hometown of the Super Bowl-champion Packers raises the bar for everyone. That includes the women's basketball team at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

"Expectations are very high," Green Bay coach Matt Bollant said. "That's just part of being at Green Bay."

The Phoenix has held up its end quite nicely with a 32-1 record it takes into today's game against Arkansas-Little Rock.

But having the Super Bowl champs as part of your neighborhood has its advantages.

The Lombardi Trophy was on the school's campus long enough for some photo opportunities.

"A lot of our players are die-hard Packer fans," Bollant said. "Football is a big deal to our team."

Nine of Green Bay's players are from Wisconsin, including all five starters.

That's what it's all about

In case anyone wonders whether Green Bay players are feeling loose or tight, you only had to watch them at center court Saturday as they waited for their practice to begin.

While standing in a circle, arms around each other's shoulders, they started doing the Hokey Pokey. Dancing and singing, they clearly were not feeling uptight.

Green Bay's inspiration

Amelia Gorton plans to be in the Intrust Bank Arena stands today to watch her favorite team, the Phoenix, play Arkansas-Little Rock.

Amelia, who's 7, has been an inspiration to the Phoenix after she met them before a practice late in the regular season. Gorton, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2, is a cancer survivor.

Do it again?

Little Rock grabbed plenty of attention last year in the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance.

As an 11th seed playing in Norman, Okla., the Trojans upset No. 6-seed Georgia Tech 63-53. They lost in the second round to Oklahoma, which reached the Final Four.

"That brought us so much visibility to our program," Little Rock coach Joe Foley said of the victory over Georgia Tech. "So much pride developed in Little Rock.

"Now, if we can just do something like that again, they'll know it wasn't a one-shot deal."

Other weapon

Marian Kursh isn't Little Rock's leading scorer or rebounder, but she is going to have to establish her presence in the paint for her team to be successful against Green Bay.

"Everybody knows about (Chastity Reed)," Foley said. "They're a good defensive team. They're going to be focusing in on (Shanika Butler) and (Reed). That's when you need that third or fourth factor to come in."

Kursh has played some of her best basketball in the Trojans' last four games, averaging 10.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. Little Rock won each of those games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and during that span Kursh scored and rebounded over her season averages.

"She had a great tournament," Foley said. "Reed would find Kursh, and she would finish it off. That was one of the reasons were so successful. We need her to step up and keep playing like she did. Then we'll become a much harder team to guard."

Kursh averaged 9.5 points during a Little Rock 14-game winning streak in midseason. In the Trojans' last two losses, which were against North Texas and South Alabama, Kursh averaged 5 points.

Redshirt players

Two of Green Bay's top scorers, Celeste Hoewisch and Julie Wojta, were given the opportunity to redshirt as freshmen. Both feel like taking an extra year made a huge difference in adjusting to the intensity of the college game.

"I think the redshirt year is the best year for you to learn the system," Hoewisch said. "You get to watch great players ahead of you. I think practicing against that type of athlete and player is beneficial. You get adjusted to playin a that speed that you're going to see."

Hoewisch is a senior and will enter today's game with 1,387 career points, eighth among Green Bay scorers. She is averaging 13.6 points while Wojta is putting up 13.7.

Cat connection

Green Bay sophomore forward Jenny Gilbertson began her college career at Kansas State. She played in 13 games for the Wildcats during the 2008-09 season, averaging 2.8 minutes. Gilbertson, who is from Wabasha, Minn., has played in 30 games for Green Bay and averages two points and 1.7 rebounds.
