WICHITA — A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper used his Taser to apprehend a motorcyclist fleeing Wichita police on a residential street Thursday night, authorities said.

The 27-year-old man raced away from a Wichita police officer who attempted to pull him over for speeding on West Kellogg at about 8:30 p.m., Lt. Doug Nolte said.

The rider sped off at speeds topping 100 miles an hour, the officer estimated. A short chase was called off when the department's police helicopter spotted and began tracking the motorcycle's movements, Nolte said.

The biker made a series of turns in residential neighborhoods for the next several minutes in an attempt to escape, Nolte said. At one point, the biker thought he was no longer being pursued and slowed.

The trooper spotted the biker riding the Suzuki GSXR in the 1700 block of Lark Lane south of Kellogg near Maize Road and used his Taser to stop him, authorities said.

He was then taken into custody.

The biker was moving at "a very slow speed" when the trooper used his Taser, Nolte said.
