Through a partnership with the Kansas Department of Corrections, the Bureau of Land Management offers gentle wild horses for adoption.

The animals have been halter- or saddle-trained by inmates in a rehabilitation program.

Adopters must be pre-approved by the BLM to adopt horses at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility in Hutchinson.

Appointments are necessary to view and adopt horses at Hutchinson. To schedule an appointment, call 620-728-3296, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Hutchinson facility is 1/4 miles west of K-61 highway on G Street in Hutchinson.

Adoption fees for trained wild horses at Hutchinson range from $200 to $750, and is payable in cash or check only.

On Sept. 8-10, a similar adoption event will be held at the Crawford County Fairgrounds in Girard.
