Wichita soldier killed in Afghanistan

Army Sgt. Eric Nettleton, 26, of Wichita died Wednesday from injuries sustained in Afghanistan, the Army announced today.

Nettleton was injured when a improvised explosive device detonated while he was on foot patrol in Dehjawz-e Hasanzay.

Nettleton was with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, which is based in Vilseck, Germany.

He graduated from Wichita West High School in 2003.

"I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of Sergeant Nettleton," Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, said in a statement. "He proudly served his country and laid down his life with honor to protect our freedoms. He is an American hero.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Nettleton family and friends who have suffered this tremendous loss."
