The four partners in Wichita's Ray Davis Roofing are opening a new business next year that focuses a little more on fun.
Innovative Golf, an indoor golf simulator business, will open in January in 2,450 square feet at 313 S. Greenwich, just north of Kellogg.
"It's almost just like playing real golf," says Dicie Nicklaus , one of the partners.
Customers bring their own clubs (though some can be provided) and swing real balls onto a screen that features one of 18 golf courses.
Customers can choose from a range of popular courses, such as Pebble Beach .
"It's not a video game," Nicklaus says. "It reads your swing just as if you were outside. ... The screen takes over and the ball keeps going digitally."
She says there are several benefits for players using the simulator.
"They can definitely improve their game. Or they can just play a round of golf."
If someone has trouble walking or if it's too hot or cold or if it's raining, Nicklaus says the simulator is a great option.
"It just takes out all the outside elements."
There will be three simulators initially with a fourth to follow. Also there will be a practice net for those waiting for a simulator.
Nicklaus says the cost to play probably will be $35 a round, though it'll be cheaper if you're playing with a foursome.
So, with a golf business and the name Nicklaus, we have to ask: Any relation to Jack ?
"Actually, my father-in-law is his second cousin, but we don't know him," Nicklaus says.
Still, she says, "Yeah, we have the right name."
Serenity in Derby
Lezlie Miles is planning to bring a little serenity to Derby in the new year.
Miles has had Serenity Mind Body Spa in Wilson Estates Medical Park for six years and has been considering ways to expand.
Then, she started getting calls from Derby residents saying they need her services, which include massage, body treatments, facials and waxing.
So Miles investigated and has decided to open near K-15 and Buckner next to Verus Bank .
In addition to the city needing spa services, Miles says part of what makes Derby attractive is "it's a community that supports their businesses very well."
She's opening in 2,800 square feet, which is bigger than the 2,600 square feet she has at Wilson Estates. Miles, who has already expanded there once, plans to expand again in the coming year. The west side is a possibility one day, too.
"It's a goal."
For now, though, Miles is concentrating on Derby.
"We're looking at first of all what the need is in Derby before we decide what services to expand into."
Miles says possibilities include nail care, spray tanning and medical aesthetics.
"If everything falls into place as we hope, we'll be open at the beginning of January."
