The Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Planning Commission voted unanimously last week to adopt Project Downtown, the master plan for revitalizing downtown Wichita.
The county planners are the latest of several groups to endorse the downtown master plan, developed by Boston-based consultant Goody Clancy after a year of study.
The master plan targets the Douglas corridor, and specifically Union Station, as the first stop for retail and entertainment development.
Last week, The Eagle reported that a group of unidentified developers is closing in on a deal for Union Station, with plans to retrofit the historic train station for retail and entertainment business.
The Wichita City Council is scheduled to consider Project Downtown on Dec. 14, according to its agenda.
Jeff Fluhr, president of the Wichita Downtown Development Corp., said Monday that his group has been meeting with various stakeholders involved in preparing the plan.
"Now that the plan is in place, we've gone back and those organizations have been electing to move forward with endorsement," Fluhr said.
"We've had a very thorough process. The organizations see how their comments and input shaped the plan, and as a result, there's ownership."
Others endorsing in the past two weeks include the Wichita Area Association of Realtors, the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Go Wichita, Visioneering Wichita, the Board of Park Commissioners, Wichita Transit Advisory Board, Wichita Downtown Development Corp. and Young Professionals of Wichita.
They join the city's historic preservation and library boards, Sedgwick County Association of Cities, Wichita Independent Neighborhoods and Old Town Association in support of the plan.
