Find reputable housing help on the Web

  • Published Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at 12:04 a.m.

Each Monday, The Eagle highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

For a complete list of You Oughta Know columns, go to www.kansas.com/oughta.

The record: A list of agencies in Kansas approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide housing counseling, including delinquent mortgage counseling.

Why you'd want it: To find a reputable agency to help a homeowner facing foreclosure or to find a counselor who can walk you through the homebuying process.

Where you get the record: From HUD's website, www.hud.gov. Click on the "State Info" link at the top of the page and then on the link for Kansas.

How much it will cost: The information is free.
