The Wichita City Council will decide this week whether to ask the state to suspend or revoke the liquor license of a Wichita bar that has been mentioned in dozens of recent police reports.
Since January 2008, Wichita police said, officers have responded to 86 calls at Harry & Ollie's, 4805 E. Harry.
Police said the calls included 29 reports of battery, and about half of those cases involved weapons.
Seven cases involved the possession of illegal drugs, police said, and officers have documented about 50 encounters with known gang members at the bar.
"The establishment at this location is a threat to the public health, safety and welfare of the neighbors as well as the patrons, of the establishment," the agenda item for the Tuesday City Council meeting said. "Additionally, the premises constitute an abnormal and unreasonable drain on public resources to secure the safety of patrons, residents and businesses.
" (The) staff believes that, based on the ongoing gang and criminal activity, the number of violent crimes and the drain on public resources, a review by the Alcohol Beverage Control
is warranted."
The agenda item said the state can revoke or suspend a liquor license after considering such factors as criminal activity at an establishment and whether it creates an unreasonable drain on public resources.
Pat Stevenson, the owner of the bar, admitted there were problems at the bar five or six years ago, but she said efforts to keep undesirable people out of the business have eliminated most problems.
"I don't know why they're doing this now," she said. "Right now the problems are really nonexistent."
She said she suspects that many of the cases mentioned by police involved incidents that happened after the bar was closed. She said she thinks others involved people who were stopped by police in front of the business.
