Soccer

A fund-raising carnival Saturday for a 4-year-old fighting acute lymphoblasic leukemia will include a silent auction for a signed soccer ball from the 1999 U.S. women's World Cup team. Signatures include Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Christine Lilly, Joy Fawcett and Carla Overbeck. The carnival is from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Family Church, 11135 W. Kellogg, and benefits 4-year-old Joey Bacon. Bids for the ball will be taken for a week after the carnival by calling 316-773-3335.

WRESTLING

Andover Central senior Jake Gentzler will sign a letter of intent today to wrestle at Arizona State. Gentzler, a two-time Class 5A individual champ, will wrestle again at 125 or 130 this season. "A lot of it is his intelligence on the mat," Andover Central coach Terry Alley said of Gentzler. "He's not an overly powerful kid, but he's long and lanky, which gives him the advantage in the offensive position, which is possibly his best area."

Football

Butler retained the top spot in the NJCAA rankings for the sixth consecutive week, while Hutchinson moved up two spots to No. 5. Hutchinson will play at Butler at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Region VI championship game.

Volleyball

Friends senior Addie Jo Petersen was chosen KCAC player of the year and the Falcons' Martin Ayin was named coach of the year. Friends' Carrie Kahn, Courtney McCune and Rexanne Schilowsky joined Petersen on the 12-player All-KCAC team. Friends finished the KCAC regular season unbeaten. On Tuesday in the KCAC quarterfinals, Friends bet Saint Mary 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-14).

Baseball

Ichiro Suzuki won his 10th straight Gold Glove for a full season of fielding excellence. Suzuki tied the AL record for Gold Gloves by an outfielder shared by Ken Griffey Jr. and Al Kaline. The Seattle right fielder has won every year he's been in the big leagues.

Basketball

Paul Millsap scored a career-high 46 points, including a putback at the buzzer to force overtime, and the Utah Jazz got two free throws from Francisco Elson with 0.4 seconds left to beat the Miami Heat 116-114. Utah erased a 22-point deficit, and overcame a 39-point night from Dwyane Wade and LeBron James' 29th career triple-double — 20 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds.... The Pacers made 20 of 21 shots in the third quarter, scoring 54 points on the way to a 144-113 win over the Nuggets. Mike Dunleavy scored 24 of his 31 points in the quarter.... Reserves Willie Green and Jarryd Bayless combined to score the Hornets' first 19 points in the fourth period and New Orleans remained unbeaten with a 101-82 win over the Clippers.

Hockey

Carey Price made 35 saves for his second shutout and the Montreal Canadiens ended Vancouver's six-game NHL winning streak with a 2-0 victory.... Steven Stamkos scored two goals and the Lightning handed the Maple Leafs their sixth straight loss, 4- 0.... Carolina scored four goals in the first 7 1/2 minutes on the way to a 7-1 win over Edmonton.... Washington won its season-high fifth straight, beating the Rangers 5-3.... Jason Spezza scored two goals and the Senators extended their winning streak to four straight with a 5-2 over Atlanta.

Motorsports

Kyle Busch was fined $25,000 by NASCAR for his obscene gesture at Sunday's race at Texas Motor Speedway, and the driver again apologized for losing his temper. "I lost my cool, plain and simple," Busch said in a statement. "It's not acceptable, and I know that." Busch was penalized for speeding at Texas and called into the pits to serve a one-lap penalty. While sitting in his car, he held up his middle finger toward the NASCAR official standing in front of his Toyota.

Tennis

Gael Monfils rallied from 5-1 down in the first set to defeat Benjamin Becker 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters. The 12th-seeded Frenchman will face Fernando Verdasco, who also rallied from a set and a break down to beat Arnaud Clement 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Verdasco needs to reach the semifinals for a chance of playing in the ATP Finals in London.

A Las Vegas court ordered boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to stay away from his former girlfriend and their two sons after prosecutors say he hit her and threatened to beat his children if they called 911. The 33-year-old Mayweather skipped a hearing Tuesday before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Diana Sullivan on eight misdemeanor and felony charges. Authorities allege Mayweather also took mobile phones belonging to Josie Harris and his sons following the Sept. 9 dispute.
