Army Spc. Tom Moffitt of Wichita was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday.

His family was notified by Army officials on Sunday.

Moffitt, 21, was a 2008 graduate of Northwest High School. He is survived by his parents, John and Brenda Moffitt, and an older brother, Jake, a student at the University of Kansas.

The Moffitts are members of Central Community Church in west Wichita.

Moffitt enlisted in the Army in February 2009, a family spokesman said. Before being assigned to Afghanistan last summer, he had served with the U.S. Army in South Korea. He was scheduled to come home on leave next month.

Funeral plans are pending.
