What a shock to learn that Chris Carrier, Wichita's director of public works, died Sunday in a motorcycle crash at age 62. Mr. Carrier's expertise and experience put him at the center of much of what the city of Wichita has done since 1997 — from fixing flooding problems to building the downtown rail bridges to upgrading the Keeper of the Plains' surroundings to advancing Kellogg. He recently had added water utilities to his vast responsibilities at City Hall, signaling leaders' confidence in his ability to help guide the department through its financial challenges. Though his no-nonsense presence at City Hall will be missed, Mr. Carrier's legacy throughout the city will be impossible to miss.
