EL DORADO — A 26-year-old man was critically injured Tuesday night in a fireworks accident in El Dorado.

El Dorado police said the accident occurred about 7 p.m. at a business in the 1800 block of North Star after some employees detonated a device made by filling a pipe with sparklers.

When the device exploded, police said, a piece of shrapnel struck Coby Hinez in the head.

Hinez, who police said is from Louisiana, was flown by air ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
